Gem's overall feature is that she's short and has the slightest chub that gives her all the right curves: a body expected of mares her family. As an anthro, she stands 5'6" with a decent sized bust. She's entirely blue, from her mane, to her eyes to her coat. Her cutie mark is the symbol for the constellation Gemini, but it's faded and sparkly like stars. It symbolize that her talent has to do with stars, illusions, and duplicates.
What isn't seen on the mare at first look is her scaring. Her years of physical abuse has left a ton of physical scars all across her body, which Gem has learned to hide with her minor skills in Illusion magic. Should she be asked or offers to reveal them, they give a ghastly display of vicious cuts, burn marks and other issues all along her body, including the scars of where half of her ear had to be sewn back on and a sliced scar right over her eye. It's not a pretty picture, but Gem refuses to have the scars permanently removed due to the weight they carry on who she is.
Gemini is quiet, nice, respectable and very introverted. Her nervousness to speak to other ponies stems from learning to keep herself in her place. Her abusive past has made her especially nervous and worrisome around stallions. She's nervous just to be close to one, and does anything she can to avoid being left alone with one. Because of this, Gem has taken a more liking to mares, especially those that seem to be nice. Her sense of right and wrong are heavily ingrained in her, so when she sees somepony in need, she's quick to step in. Gem in general is opposed to violence and violent acts. However, if the violence, be it emotional, mental or physical, towards her keeps other ponies out of harms way, she is more than willing to take that sacrifice.
Gem used to suffer from a major lack of self-esteem. She saw absolutely nothing unique or special about herself, and she was quick to argue against anypony that said otherwise. Referring to her as 'cute' 'beautiful' 'lovely' 'gorgeous' or just about any compliment that regards to her physically or emotionally got her blushing and either denying it or going quiet. Her experiences from living in Ponyville, however, have lead Gem to grow and be far more confident with herself. She's comfortable around stallions and happily joins discussions with others. However, she is still quite shy and rarely approaches others first unless she knows them or she sees they need help with something.
In between her studies, Gemini has discovered her special talent of Illusions. Specifically, she's really good at making illusions of things she's seen and especially felt. If she's given enough of a magical boost, she can even make an illusion capable of physical contact for a brief amount of time.
Gemini holds a strong preferences to mares over stallions, and prefers a romantic relationship that includes sex but doesn't revolve around it. She does like to be spoiled, but she very much prefers to be the one spoiling the pony that she's with, willing and able to do almost anything she's asked. She is quite submissive but she's grown confident enough to put her hoof down and say no means no if things get out of hoof for her in a relationship.
Gemini was born and raised in Trottingham in a seriously bigoted household. Anything that has a horn wings, and especially both are considered a second class citizen as far as her entire family was concerned. This goes double for mares, as the stallions consider themselves all around superior with the only exception being the two princesses of the land. Gemini's parents are both earth ponies, but it seems there's some unicorn blood in there because she herself sports a horn.
Being both a unicorn and a mare, Gem had a troubled time in her youth. Growing up, she was physically (but not sexually) abused on a daily basis. She did receive an education, but it restrained all magical learning and due to low self esteem and lacking proper social interaction at home, she became an outcast to her schoolmates and an easy target for bullies. In lieu of her magical training, she was being taught to take the proper role of a female in the usual Trottingham home, forced to learn to clean, cook, watch after ponies younger than her, and respect the stallion to whom she "belonged" to. Failure at any of these resulted in quick and often quite violent punishments.
Gem's only escape was bedtime. There she would refuse to sleep, instead spending her time gazing out at the nightime sky. She watched Luna's plain, lost in the dark sea of glistening stars as she felt the weight of all her problems slowly slip away into her subconscious. Upon reaching the appropriate age, Gemini left and moved to Ponyville to live a much more peaceful life. She's finally studying magic through mail-order schooling and holds numerous jobs around Ponyville to pay for her rent and classes. She's specifying in classes revolving around Illusion magic, something that she knows her parents highly disapprove of, but they actually don't know about...yet.
History of the Character
Gemini was once just an OC recolor of Twilight. This is due to the origins of the character which where entirely roleplayed out. I originally started off as a canon Twilight roleplayer. I wasn't the best, but I could play her character convincingly enough. We were doing a roleplay through the episode "Party of One" when the roleplay decided to twist into disaster. A fire had broken out at sugarcube corner, but then it wasn't there, but then it was again with some ponies dead, some ponies not, it was just chaos. Turns out the RP turned into a Dr. Who inspired event, with a major flux in alternate timelines forcing them to collide. The Doctor somehow managed to fix the flux, but the result was that Twilight found herself in an alternate dimension.
As Twilight got to learn about the new dimension she was in, she learned of the OTHER twilight there. In order to keep herself unique, she magically changed her color to blue and started calling herself Twilight's twin, and thus she named herself Gemini. The more I RP'd with "Gemini Sparkle", the more she grew into her own personality and character, to the point where the only two similarities between her and Twilight were the fact that they studied and looked a lot alike.
Gem is now her own character with her own backstory, but I really enjoyed the root of the character and how it managed to grow into its own thing.
