Started out as a joke at work. My colleagues planned a party for me in celebration of my soon to be born daughter (Whose middle name is going to be Celestia actually!) Was originally meant to be a surprise, but my boss mistakenly said that I didn't like surprises, which is basically an excuse that he doesn't know me that well
My colleague and I decided that since it's not a surprise anymore, then we can pull a few strings and change some stuff on the company budget. So we started making some insane requests like an ice cream cake instead of a regular cake. Then I thought that it would be funny if it were decorated with MLP:FiM figures on top. We had to really keep a straight face to make the planners believe that we were serious.
Since I never saw an episode of MLP, I decided to give it a go since I didn't know much about it, so my wife and I started to watch season 1 of MLP. My reaction went kind of like this:
First episode? "meh, it's ok. Good writing."
Second? "huh, not what I expected. That's cool."
Third? "Actually this is really cool"
Fourth? "Hooked. Let's go to BronyCon."
That's my story. Not really a depressing one for me, but I been through that phase of my life already back in junior high and high school, so I'm good for now.
