@SimeonLeonard; Hmm well, I for one missed this blog post when it came out. I'm not too much up to date on a lot of things fandom wise (convention wise?) other than I guess my own pone niche, cough BerryPunch cough. hehe Well, that and real life as always. 6_9 But I digress, I do have to agree with your one point of that lack of cohesion that so many of us felt in the early years. That's been something my mind has been trying to find ever since I came back home from Bronycon 2012 in that hot July summer. There was something at last years con that did seem a bit missing to me, and again I might be crazy, but that might have been just it... It could be that, or the expansiveness of it all that is always Bronycon since being in Baltimore. That being typed, I still do think Bronycon/Ponycons do offer a lot more than a typical convention. I don't really get the same feeling walking away from any other con I go to, save for Rushcon, where it's about 150+ of us Rush geeks & nerds gathered, most recently (and lastly ) touring around Toronto in school busses to different Rush "historical sites," Rush cover band, games, etc... Oh yeah, Canterlot Gardens was my 2nd ponycon! ^_^ They seemed to work in other VA's really nicely. Aaand if I recall, the one and only (so far at least, I still have hope) ponycon in Toronto also featured a little bit of non-pone in panels.
I still need to read through the other 101 responses, more comments and thoughts to follow! But thanks for starting the discussion!
@peruserofpieces Hey, how's it going man!! ^_^ Ah, I'll be doing Trotcon this year, first time, too! I miss those Ohio cons, well.. Mostly cause my second Ponycon was Canterlot Gardens back in the day, and I guess, only day. XD
Ah, that being said I guess my next caveat about my little wall of text is I am not doing Bronycon this year. Not because of this slight content shift/introduction or anything else con-wise. Just a personal choice and I'd like to see another con. I'll be very eager to head back there in 2018 I know I'm really going to be missing it this year!! >_<
@Bucephalus, @EquinePalette (hiya again ^_^) Have to really agree with that point exactly. I think this move is more to keep the con progressing and attract more attendance. It was a pretty big shocker seeing the attendance drop that much I was expecting still in the upper 8000.. So,nothing wrong with trying to attract a few new folks and I do hope it goes well and I hope & can't wait to see it next year!! (Ah I don't want to think of the show coming to a close!! I'm still coming to terms with "no Rush touring anymore.")
@WiiCubeFilms Eeek! I hope that is not the case and feel awful for that to happen.. I've mostly gone to FanExpo up here in Toronto "Brony'd out" heh and I never get any flack for it at all. Actually, I know a few artist alley tables that will usually ask where my SweetiePlush is at if I'm cosplaying as the Dude or something different. XD But they are fairly equal billing for all and any fandoms and pretty pro pony too. I did find this year at FanEX that is was harder to find pone plushies, pokemon seemed to be the huge rage this year. Hmm almost a tie in with the poster underneath, in years past they've had Tara, Andrea, Cathy, Tabitha, and they've all been touted ponies first. Tara exclusively has always had HUGE lines but I think that's just her wide ranging shows/fandoms she's dipped herself into.
@wolfspirit20 I'd agree with the announcement's timing, although... This years con is still 178 days left to go.. That being typed, and the fact I'm not going but that was determined by myself many months ago (October-November ish), I still do really agree it should have been announced earlier. Hmm having a few other non-pony VA's, I would be worried it might turn into any sort of regular Con. But I still direct back to my attendance of Canterlot Gardens and how it can be done and still turn out awesome.
@benhead Lots of great points there!
@BigSparkle2610 hehe I had a really great time being the Dude, with pony ears but man love the Big Lebowski.. Yeah I think I remembered seeing the Metal Gear Twi running around the halls!
Ahhh got to the end! Well, I think it will be a good addition to Bronycon. I support it. Even with my choosing not to attend this year, still very heartbroken over that choice, I would be very excited to see what new plans would be in store for this year (I hope it goes well and carries over to 2018 when I will be back for sure!). I know I'm simply reiterating a few points from above, but I've seen the "pop culture influence" and varying fandoms at Bronycon already, in both merch and cosplay. I have to add too, that I never seem to catch more than 5 panels at any given convention really, pony or non pony. So the addition of a few non-pony panels does not sound like a make or break decision for myself at least.
